My Students
Martin Luther King Jr. once said, "Intelligence plus character - that is the goal of true education." These words cross the line between Content Learning and Life Lessons. There is much more to a classroom than the ABC's, 1,2,3's, and Abe Lincoln. The "History of Me" opens my students' eyes to life!
I teach at a small Title I Charter School in Arizona.
The students that walk into my class room come from families that live paycheck to paycheck and rarely have the resources to purchase supplies for a major project or assignment. Despite their adverse circumstances, they've come this far through their educational career and are determined to take it to the next step. They walk into my class room every day ready to tackle whatever I lay before them and eager to listen and to learn.
My Project
I have requested 35 scrapbooks with which my students can complete a major project I assign in my Sociology class. Much of sociology is about learning about how people interact within various groups; therefore the "History of Me" project is a year long project in which the students learn about themselves and how they interact in various groups - within their family, with their friends, in their school, within their community, inside their culture, within their race, etc. And the things they learn not only opens my eyes to their lives, the project opens their eyes to who they are as a student, as a sibling, as a child, as an American, as an African-American, a Hispanic-American, a Christian, a Muslim, a Mormon ... the History of Me teaches my students about who they are, where they've been, and where they are going.
With your support, my students will learn that no matter where they come from, what nationality, culture, color of skin; each one lives a life that is full of hopes, dreams, aspirations, pain, guilt, suffering, joy, happiness, and love.
The scrapbooks will allow each student to focus on the specific focus of the project - themselves - rather than making the project a financial decision. And when they share their History of Me at the end of the year, they'll learn they are all in this together.
