My students need books that highlight a different voice in our studies of the colonization of America. We will also be giving our students hands on experiences with the drum and archery set.
As my fourth year at my school is starting, I have gotten to know this school and its heart. I was overwhelmed by the parents and students, and the drive they have to learn and support teachers and faculty. Our school is diverse in many ways. We have many different languages and religions represented. We have an extremely high population of ESE students, who require intensive reading and math intervention.
What I love about my school is that the families here love to learn, and the parents are instilling that in their students.
So each student, no matter where they are in their learning journey, is trying and working to be a better student.
My Project
This year my team and I want to dive in and get rid of the worksheets and instead build background with hands on experiences. I will be transforming my room into a Native American village as we learn about early Florida History and the voices of the Natives that often get diminished. Each child will pick a book that was requested and complete a book project highlighting what they have learned in front of the class.
We will be using the drum and archery set to motivate and excite students as well as giving them a first hand experience in what a Native American village life was like.
