I teach in a diverse district where about 60% of the students are classified as minorities, and approximately 10% of the students speak a language other than English at home. They face daily struggles, including being the victims of bullying in the classroom and the community.
Although the poverty level here is high, many of the juniors I teach have big dreams for the future and plan to attend college.
Some of these college-bound students are reluctant readers, and some of them have experienced bullying. I hope to address both of these issues by reading one of the year’s hottest books, The Help, and also a book that discusses bullying in schools.
My Project
Because of the diversity, poverty, and difficult decisions my students face, I'd like to include literature which my students can relate to. The Help by Kathryn Stockett, a novel that addresses issues of stereotypes and socioeconomic statuses, is a perfect choice for my eclectic group of juniors. I am requesting a class set of this book, and an audio book of this novel also.
The students will benefit from learning that the issues they deal with today are the same issues that others have dealt with for generations. Students will have a broader understanding of how important issues of racism, feminism, and poverty are in our own community.
In addition, I plan to pair the reading of The Help with a class set of the book, Bullying in Schools. I hope that by combining these two pieces of literature we will be able to discuss issues of bullying, and make a difference in our school.
Your help will enable my students to read literature that relates to my students' lives and help them realize that they can face any obstacle.
