The Help U Give: Engaging Students Through Responsive Texts
My students need 35 copies of Angie Thomas' The Hate U Give, because culturally responsive texts help my students see themselves in literature.

My Students
As a teacher in a high poverty district, my students come into the classroom with many challenges. Learning reading and writing skills has been especially difficult for my students. Their access to meaningful and challenging works of literature has been limited. However, something that has helped to bridge the gap in their understanding are works of literature that reflect their experiences.
My students enjoy reading young adult literature, especially literature that reflects their own environment, emotions, and struggles.
I have seen first-hand how engaged students can become when they see themselves represented on the page.
My Project
This year my class is focusing on exploring social justice. One of the ways that we are doing this is by reading literature that challenges our perceptions of the world and asks us to engage more fully in bringing about social change. "The Hate U Give," by Angie Thomas can help us achieve this because by telling the story of one young African-American girl's journey toward self-determination and justice, it shows that a single individual can have a significant impact on the world.
More importantly, this book reflects challenges my students face everyday.
It is important that my students read about characters who face similar challenges, from similar circumstances because it helps them understand that they are important and can overcome these challenges, too.
