About My Students

This is an exciting opportunity for our students to lead a project, in which Ming and Joyce proposed that we request for an air conditioner for our room that has a temperature of above 85F over 50% of the school year. Please help us before it is too hot for everyone to function!

My students developed this idea via their willingness to share what they think will help their fellow classmates to make the learning space more feasible for learning. Our classroom is super hot during the warm months and students playing instruments only adds more hot air. We are arguably the hottest room in the entire building on the third floor. We've gotten some great resources via DonorsChoose, but kids won't be able to stay after school because it will just be too hot. Students really enjoy Chinese class and want to practice speaking, but are unable to focus fully due to the heat...even during class. Two students proposed that we should request for an air conditioner. Please consider helping us!

Students are using Chinese to apply and take advantage of after-school community programs in our Chinatown neighbor, summer music camps, and using it to help with college applications and opportunities. However, students have not been able to stay fully focused due to the heat in the room. We are located on the third floor and the school building is too old that we do not have air conditioning. We are in a room with tremendous heat and constantly sweating! It will be extremely difficult for our students to learn. This project is proposed by my two very caring students who want to make our learning environment a cooler place, literally. As a teacher, it is rewarding to see that my students care! Please consider helping us!

In Their Own Words

The goal we are trying to accomplish is to make our learning environment better. We are in a Chinese classroom that gets hot during the summer and we even sweat in class. It is hot in Mrs. Zhao's room. On a cold day, her room will be the warmest. On a hot day, her room will be like the Sahara desert. We can learn a great deal in her class, but we cannot focus much when it gets hot. We want to request the air conditioner to make our classroom a better learning environment. That is our goal.

This project allows me to be a leader to bring positive change for my classmates. We want to make the learning environment a more focused place. Physically, it is too hot in the classroom for our classmates to stay focus. This problem happens from mid-April until the end of June, and in September and October. This accounts for a total of 5 and a half months of learning time and that is 50% of our school year. We want to help solve this problem for our learning environment via this opportunity.

This project is important for me and my school community because it will solve the problem of an injustice in education. We know that it is important for students to learn in an environment that fosters creativity, yet limitations such as a hot classroom makes it difficult for my classmates and me to learn and practice the Chinese language! Our classroom is at least 80 degree on with highs in the 90s. On days like that we simply cannot stay focused. This project will help solve the problem for us. Thanks!
