Help me give my students the experience to see literature come to life in film. Help my students the ways in which youth voice can affirm and empower their capabilities as change agents within their communities.

My Students
My students are 10th and 11th graders at a neighborhood high school on Chicago's South Side. With 763 students for the 2018-2019 school year, we already have 150 more students than last year. Our school is a place where kids want to be and our reputation within the city as a supportive environment is a direct cause for our increased enrollment. Despite our supportive environment, our students still face struggles outside of school. 94% of our students come from low income households, which requires the school to ensure we have extensive resources and help expose our students to many experiences. In spite of challenges, we graduate about 100+ students each year and our students have earned over $30,000,000 in scholarships over the past 3 years that I've worked at Phillips.
My classes are small group English classes that ensure students receive differentiation and pacing to support individualized learning plans.
25% of our students have disabilities, which is why providing a variety of resources and learning experiences is so important to my classroom context. "The Hate U Give" is a classroom favorite and I want to provide my students with the opportunity to see this movie in theaters.
My Project
This project will make a difference in the lives of my students because they have a range of strengths and learning modalities that will be supplemented by seeing "The Hate U Give" come to life in film. Being able to apply faces to names and see the events unfold on the big screen will reinforce the material they have read and discussed. Additionally, this will foster discussion about the ways in which literature and film can be differently interpreted by authors and film producers. Seeing a movie is not just a "reward" or an end-of-unit activity, it is an authentic activity that supports and helps solidify the learning experience of the book they have spent so much time reading.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
