My Students
I teach African-American History to a group of talented, creative, and hard-working students in West Philadelphia. My students have had a really strong start to high school and specifically learning about their own place in African-American History. They started the school year with a Sankofa bird dedication, where each student dedicated their learning to someone in their family or community. Through the study of African cultural values during the first week and this dedication, I'm working on building a positive and supportive community.
My Project
Last year in collaboration with their Social Justice and Literature teachers students read "The Hate U Give." As a follow up to this educational experience, students will go to the movies to watch the movie production of this story.
The donations to this project will help students explore issues of activism, injustice, and racial identity.
All of the 9th grade teachers will help facilitate discussion about the Black Lives Matter movement and police brutality before and after the movie. Students will also be further exploring issues of racism in my African-American History course. We will regularly make connections between our daily learning and the movie.
