Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach in the Bronx, at a Title I school that's 99% minority and 99% low-income. My students are smart, ambitious, and always willing to speak up for themselves and what they believe in.
As kids from the Bronx, they live in a world where they've had to grow up too fast.
In my creative writing class, my students are reading stories that represent and challenge the world around them. Stories like The Hate U Give allow them to engage in conversations they are already having outside of the classroom.
My Project
The Hate U Give is a movie about Black Lives Matter, police brutality, and, ultimately, finding your voices. My creative writing class focuses on reading, discussing, and writing about topics relevant to students and their lives, and THUG is a part of that. The first day of class, we watched the trailer and wrote about it as part of a writing exercise.
My students, all of whom had never taken a creative writing class before, wrote moving, heartbreaking stories about the realities of racism and police brutality, from having to drive with the windows down so police officers could see their faces to assumptions others made who they were and what they are capable of based off of their skin color.
Beyond watching the trailer and reading the book, seeing the movie will empower students and enable them to see learning as multifaceted, complex, and relevant to themselves and their daily lives.
