Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are the perfect representation of the exciting melting pot that is Nashville. They come from diverse backgrounds and have life experiences that shadows my own. They have strong views on what they want to change in the world and are not afraid to stand up for what they believe in.
In order for my students to fully understand the world around them, they need culturally relevant text.
Most of my students come from low-income families with little means to buy books. I believe that given the proper resources, my students would be able to see that the United States is composed of people with different backgrounds and that there is no individual that is the perfect representation of the country. Due to the vast amount of diversity in the country, all backgrounds and upbringings are essential to the American experience.
My Project
I want to include The Hate U Give so that students would be able to understand the importance of diversity in this country. I want to include the injustices against certain minority groups in my curriculum.
Often, schools place such a large emphasis on the civil rights movement of the past that they overlook modern-day racism and the battle that minority groups face today.
I want to teach students how to identify racial prejudice and accept people from different backgrounds. There is no one correct story in order to be an American and that is something that students need to be aware of.
