Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

School libraries are a place for inquiry into the world around them, and provide an array of resources for learning. Einstein said, "Play is the highest form of research." His observation can be applied to health and nutrition activities and games, in which students develop investigative skills hands on.

My students attend a pre-K through 8th grade Mexican-American, urban, low income elementary school.

The students, staff and families of this neighborhood public school exemplify what it means to be a genuine community. Everyone works together to provide a well-rounded education for each child. Their dedication is exemplified by continued academic improvement. Every student visits the library weekly, where they are encouraged to inquire about their world and use critical thinking skills to develop deeper understandings. This year, our primary grades will be focusing on health and nutrition. Students will research how the human body and all its parts work together and how to physically and mentally keep it strong by making good choices.

My Project

The 5 Senses Instant Learning Center will provide children a hands-on exploration of the senses, complete with photo cards and sorting mats. Students will earn health tokens and practice skill building by answering science questions written in standardized test form by playing the "Can Do! Human Body Game." They will have fun learning about nutrition by sorting foods and food groups using the Nutrition Instant Learning Center. The Healthy Lifestyle Choices Curriculum will provide students with the knowledge and skills to make healthy choices in six critical areas: decision-making/goal setting, nutrition, fitness, violence prevention, safety and substance abuse prevention. And, of course, no library visit is complete without adding in some colorful and engaging books, provided by the Food and Nutrition Theme Books Library. These resources will literally stimulate all the senses, thereby appealing to all types of diverse learners.

The library is a place to seek information.

Information is power and can be shared. These resources will help young children understand the power they have over their own bodies and life choices. Armed with this knowledge, our young learners can continue to grow and thrive in a safe and healthy manner.
