The Greatest 5th Grade Year, EVER!

Help me give my students the best 5th-grade year! 5th grade is not an easy year, with many changes. I strive to teach my kids how to be self-sufficient within the class and outside of it.

My Project

Every year, I strive to ensure that my class is set up for my students' success by maintaining a self-sufficient classroom.

To enable a learner, I must be adequately prepared for everything they bring through my class doors.

Many of these kids come from struggling/ broken homes that don't emphasize the importance of education. What makes my kids so special is their drive to continue to grow and learn, even when the odds are against them. They carry emotional baggage that most adults outside of education wouldn't believe. I must be prepared to not only be a teacher, but be a counselor, mom, and mentor to these kids.

The Student Center in my room is where the students have access to writing tools, staplers, tape, highlighters, coloring tools, glue, scissors, erasers, and a pencil sharpener. Headphones will be kept in this area as well for the students who need them while on devices.

Positive reinforcements are a huge saving grace for these kids. Although they try to act older than they are, they truly enjoy fidgets and small toys. I often like to give desk pets to help teach them responsibility. I plan on using the bubble timers and maze mats for positive reinforcement time.

The paper storage will help my students stay organized when submitting their work. We will complete many group/ partner activities that involve using the large poster paper. Each class will have a specific color folder for their paper assignments and trackers, to help with organization. The books are for the class library. I have found that puzzles and graphic novels are a grade-level favorite.
