Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students live in a low-income/high poverty, urban school district. They are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom, including emotional trauma, a high mobility rate, and many other special needs. Many of them are being raised in single-parent households and ninety-nine percent receive a free lunch and breakfast. My students are seventy percent Hispanic and thirty percent African-American. The majority of my students are far below the national and state standards in reading and math.
Our school is very limited when it comes to distributing resources.
We would like to do more to provide our children with the supplies they need, but our school budget crisis makes this difficult.
My Project
The Great Pencil Challenge: With an assigned pencil pouch each, students will be responsible for 5 pencils and an eraser. Their job is to keep their pencils in good condition for a week. At the end of the week the pouches will be collected and pencils will be sharpened or replaced if necessary. Whoever keeps all 5 of their pencils and eraser in their pouch will receive a prize to start off the next week.
Students are challenged to care and be responsible for their belongings.
With these resources, they will be ready to learn for the school day and spend less time looking for or sharpening pencils. My goal is to enhance organization, preparation, and responsibility skills for their life after elementary!
