My first-grade family is made up of 18 creative, kind, hard-working, and FUN students who are growing in so many important ways this year. They especially enjoy learning that is meaningful to them, with lots of opportunities for personal connections.
Hatching chickens in our classroom brings science to life for my students.
Having an incubator will give them the opportunity to observe the development inside the egg (by candling the eggs), watch the hatching process, and ENJOY live chicks in our classroom for a few days. As scientists, they will draw and write about their observations daily so other students at our school can learn too. (each child will document growth inside the egg and post it on a chart in the hall for all students to enjoy) This learning journey begins after my students are introduced to a bald eagle nest via webcam. We observe it for several weeks, document the adult eagle as well as eaglet behaviors, and even get to see the young eagles fledge the nest. Seeing the nest in the wild as well as having the eggs in our classroom gets my students excited to learn about animal life cycles and how offspring have the same traits as their parents.
Throughout this project, the kids are highly engaged in meaningful work that hopefully inspires them to one day become biologists, writers, farmers, conservationists, or even teachers!
