"Every one suspects himself of at least one of the cardinal virtues, and this is mine: I am one of the few honest people that I have ever known." Nick Carraway and I have a lot in common. I HONESTLY believe that my students deserve their own copies of The Great Gatsby.
My students are high school juniors in a co-taught classroom.
A special education teacher and I have the honor of working with this high-energy group of young adults. Some of these students have requested that we read The Great Gatsby this year. It is most definitely a worthy text; however, we do not have enough copies for every student.
My Project
The Great Gatsby is a special novel. It is one of the few classics that was written during the time period that it takes place. Fitzgerald wrote about the Roaring Twenties during the 1920s. It is the perfect text to pair with historical documents and has challenging language that we can analyze together in class. A book written during this time period also opens the opportunity for many different research topics, a skill all high school students must learn.
By purchasing these novels, you are giving my students a gift.
They will each keep their copy of The Great Gatsby and be encouraged to write and take notes directly in the book. This is a treat they rarely, if ever, get to do in a high school classroom. With your help, I hope to inspire my students to love reading.
