My Project
My 5th graders are excited to try puppetry in their Drama class. They have used a store-bought puppet in my classroom to create unique (and a lot of the time hysterical) personalities.
Why use pre-made, store-bought puppets when we can build our own!?

They will take this idea and run with their own to create one-of-a-kind puppets to be included in a show at the end of the school year.
To do this project, we will need colorful socks, strong craft-grade toilet paper rolls to prevent mid-performance puppet brain surgeries, and some felt and foam to make facial features, clothes and accessories. We are also hoping for a step stool so we can safely reach the light switch during our shows.
I know from past experience that this unit is a hit, especially for shy students, as well as students who are learning English as a new language. My kids are already asking when they can take the puppets home and they haven't even built them yet!
