My Students

My fourth grade students amaze me every day. Our school is located in Northeastern Los Angeles county and my students come to me from a variety of backgrounds. They are excited to learn, and they love to read. My students are athletes, martial artists, musicians and painters. Around 35% of the students at our school qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. Being a small school with big ambitions, our teachers are always seeking ways to be creative, innovative, and engaging.

A large portion of the fourth grade Social Studies curriculum focuses on the Gold Rush and missions in California.

Learning about the Gold Rush from our Social Studies book is interesting, but learning about by reading a novel will make the Gold rush come alive!

My Project

My students love learning about the early days of California, but to make the Gold Rush come alive, I have requested 21 copies of the book, By The Great Horn Spoon! by Sid Fleischman. This story is about a 12-year old boy who begins his 15,000-mile, five-month journey as a stowaway on a ship. The ship travels around Cape Horn and many adventures ensue - on the journey to California and in California too.

We will tie in the Social Studies curriculum while reading this novel, and my students will love the cross curriculum connections this book makes.

My students will shop for supplies as prospectors with play money and learn how expensive it was to be a prospector during the Gold Rush.
