My students need enough "just right" books so that each can take some home for the holidays.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The best gift a child can get is the gift of a good story. My students love to read and are devouring the books in our classroom at lightening speed! Unfortunately most of the books in our small library are outdated, tattered copies of books published years before they were born.
I teach in a very low income area of New York City.
Ours is a special school for children and families who have fallen on hard times. All of my students have emotional and/or behavioral problems that affect their daily functioning. Many of my students are victims of abuse and neglect as well as in the foster care system.
Despite the enormous challenges faced by these tiny children, they are motivated in school and love to learn.
My Project
A book can be a great way to take a break from the troubles of everyday life and relax. I want to give my students these books for the holiday season. They will be able to practice independent reading at home and read a current, exciting book that keeps them engaged over the winter break.
My students do not receive any gifts for the holidays other than the ones we get them at school.
I personally believe that there is no greater gift than the gift of a good story. I want my students to start a home library so they can take a break with a book from their hard knock lives'.
