My Students

Recent state scores have labeled our elementary school as under-performing. Therefore, it is important for us, as teachers, to foster their love for reading, while teaching them the required state standards of excellence that will improve their college-career readiness.

Our 4th-grade students are bright, young people that, as a majority, are living in a low income and poverty-stricken community.

Their unanimous love for a recent historical fiction novel read as a class, has inspired the 4th-grade teachers to want to gift them their own copy of its sequel.

My Project

As a result of a recent novel study of George Washington's Socks in 4th grade, our students fell in love with historical fiction. They were truly engaged and riveted to the unfolding of the story set during the American Revolution. Due to their excitement for the plot, they were able to perform academically higher than expected on reading standards that focus on character analysis, summarizing, paraphrasing, and key details, all while tying fiction with social studies standards.

Where our struggling readers will often avoid reading grade-level texts or historical fiction because of its difficulty, we hope that providing their own copy of its sequel will further their excitement to grow as an independent reader.
