My Project
Currently, the math classrooms I support lack full classroom sets of calculators needed to tackle rigorous math problems. Besides there not being a full classroom set, the calculators that are available vary, making it hard to instruct English Language Learners who rely on visuals to overcome language barriers. Since there are 3 to 4 different types of calculators in our room, we can't just show everyone how to use the calculator, we have to walk around to each individual student to ensure they know how to use the buttons that are specific to the type of calculator they have on any particular day. One day they may have one style and the next day they may get another style, so we are back to square one! My students are amazing, intelligent young adults who bring so much diversity, love, and laughter to the classroom. They have already faced so many challenges in life and deserve only the best. A calculator may seem so insignificant, but these calculators will help reduce the stress of math!
While it would be ideal for each student to have their own calculator to take to and from home, the reality is that many of the students I support don't have the extra $20 to afford a calculator of their own.
Having these calculators will help ensure that our students are equipped with the correct tools, as they tackle rigorous math problems. It will also help us enforce our school’s electronics policy of phones away during academic learning time. We won't have to be the “phone police” when students tell us that they need the phone for the calculator because there aren't enough in the classroom to go around.
