Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Challenges Needed! The Common Core State Standards have come to my classroom, but the materials needed to adequately teach them are missing. While our current literature books have a few selections, it is not enough, and I desperately need to supplement it.
My students like a challenge, but relying only on our textbook does not meet their needs.
A few selections from Walden is not effective as an entire chapter (which this material gives us.) How do you really grasp "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God" with just a bit of the beginning and the end? Not only does this text include these titles, but it also gives the students a guide on how to read challenging texts (in the margins.) I am determined to get them prepared for the rigor of college, and this would help me towards that goal.
My Project
Imagine this...Unit 6, World War II. We read the literature about the bombing of Pearl Harbor and the use of the first atomic bomb on Japan. Then we reach for this book and read the Popular Science Monthly article entitled "Annihilation Bomb - Friend or Foe?". Can you hear the discussions this will generate in the classroom? Can you imagine the interest level the kids will display? These are the kind of supplementary materials that is sorely missing in the high school classroom today.
I always tell the kids that the most rewarding things in life are those moments that you work hard for, the ones that test your resolve.
Reading is the same way. I know that they will be frustrated at first with the readings, even with the guided activity in the margins. But I am confident that they will persevere. In the end, those college texts will be more accessible to them - a great gift in the making.
This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
