My Students
As a student, I began to struggle to find interesting things to read during summer vacations. Many of my students are a few short months away from finding themselves in the same situation. They love to pour over books in my small in class library. They borrow the popular titles and settle disagreements about who gets to take it home next with rock-paper-scissors. My students come from all over Philadelphia, some getting on the school bus as early as 5:45 to make it to school on time. While many of them have their basic needs met, the luxury of a new book often escapes them. Their ability to curl up with a good book hinges on being in school. However, summer is quickly approaching. The goal (that all of the kids unanimously voted for): for each upper elementary student to take 1-2 books home for the summer. These would be their books to continue building their love reading for pleasure.
My Project
Many of my students do not have books within their homes. When they leave school for the summer, their reading is finished for two months. Over this school year, they've been given full access to my classroom library. They are able to borrow books to take home whenever they'd like. Many of them are building up a love of reading and I want that love to continue to grow. Several of my students claim that they don't like to read. I always respond, "WE just haven't found the genre for YOU, yet." About a week ago, I took a poll of my students. "How many of you would like to a book or two to take home for the summer? The books would be yours forever". Instantly, ninety percent of their hands shot into the air. Your donations will help show my students that reading isn't just for school. It can be fun, engaging, and exciting to take a journey in your imagination.
