My Students
Most people probably can't recall the exact moment their love of reading was born, but I do! Until 6th grade, I disliked reading. However, one day a very special teacher began reading "Little Women" to my class after lunch. Yes, that was THE moment I remember changed my world. I liked READING!
I'm so thankful that I teach in our tiny community school.
Even though we're located in an economically disadvantaged area, our students work so hard. Last year, our school was in the top 10 percent of Title I schools. That's a huge accomplishment!
Our school is K-8; we have around 120 students. (We're small, aren't we?) I absolutely love teaching 4th grade. This will be my fourth year of teaching, and I finally feel like I have a good idea about what makes 4th graders tick. First of all, they LOVE anything hands-on. I work really hard to see that they have the opportunity to do lots of experiments, projects, and go on a few neat field trips. Next, they enjoy working together in groups. We do that everyday during our literacy workstations. (Thanks to donors like you we have literacy games, books, and reader's theater scripts for these daily workstations.) Finally, 4th graders really look forward to reading "REAL" books. Novels!
My Project
Making time to foster a love of reading can be a challenge when there's so much to do each day. It's definitely worth the effort though. I believe it's a mistake when teachers maintain the primary focus on the "reading book" or basal reader. Kids really miss out on learning to love to read--like I did when I was in 6th grade. I've collected several novels that we truly enjoy reading each year, but we are in need of the books on CD. I hope you'll decide to help us with this request. We already have class sets of each of the books I'm requesting--just no Cds. The Cds will really come in handy when students are absent and need to catch up on reading. Also, some of my students are struggling readers, and listening to the story helps them with fluency and comprehension. Finally, I must share the last reason that the Cds are important to my kiddos. They simply ENJOY hearing someone read to them. The professional readers simply bring the story to life.
