This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a third grade teacher at a school that is located in a lower socioeconomic area. My school is a Title 1 school, which means that the school receives aid from the government. This aid includes, but is not limited to, a free lunch program for all students. The school is currently a Program Improvement school. This means that the school has been designated as "low performing" within our district. Despite the school's current circumstances, I consider my students to be full of potential and very eager to learn. They just need the right resources and materials to help them meet their full potential.
Each day my colleagues and I try to come up with creative ways to capture our student's interest. We stand in front of them using our booming voices and try to get them excited about things other than television and video games. We want them to take a genuine interest in reading, writing, math, and science. But how does one get children to willingly and eagerly practice newly learned and challenging concepts without ominous threats of future tests? The answer is "GAMES"! Educational games will get any child excited about learning.
In order to help my students take an active role in their own educations, I need some educational games that will capture their interest. Due to the widely publicized budget cuts that our school district is now experiencing, the funds for such supplemental learning materials are not currently available to me. Games purchased with your generous donation would be used daily during our Independent Work Time. During this time students would be able to play them and reinforce the concepts being learned during instruction. This will ultimately result in better retention, which will translate to better test scores.
Teachers like me will continue to stretch our creativity to the limit in order to ensure that our students meet their maximum potential, but we can’t do it alone. We need the generosity of donors like you to help us create fun and dynamic learning opportunities. If you choose to fund this project, you will be literally be using games to take the content off of the pages of books and firmly plant it in the minds of my students.
