My Students

My students inspire me from the minute I see them walk into our classroom. They want to learn and truly enjoy being at school. I rarely have students absent! We start our morning with breakfast and friendly conversations, which is so important to English Language Learners. Next, they welcome our fish "Gator" and as a class, we practice our Mindfulness and Meditation. We end morning meditation with a mantra about acceptance, respect and being ready to learn.

I teach at a Title I school in Arizona, all of my students are second language learners and most of their parents do not speak English.

My entire class is on free and reduced lunch. Many of them struggle to get backpacks and school supplies each year. Despite so many hardships, my students rarely give up learning and aren't afraid to get help when they don't understand. I have found that they take excellent care of our classroom and show such pride in the community we built. My favorite part of being with them is seeing them express through kind words and smiles how much they appreciate getting an education.

My Project

Have you ever sat in that foreign language class and felt like you were in the middle of a Charlie Brown cartoon? The teacher is in front of the class and all you hear is "Wahn, Wahn, Wahn". These times can be frustrating. We get the "gist" of what is being taught, but it is exhausting to try to put together the pieces. Using flexible seating in my classroom has cut down on distractions, provided more space for cooperative learning, and give me more opportunities to move freely around the room to assist students. Another huge advantage to flexible seating is my students are able to stretch their minds and body. When you are physically uncomfortable it is difficult to be focused and engaged.

By donating the yoga balls and wobble chairs to our project, you will not only help to improve and increase student attention and focus, you will ultimately help to increase their academic achievement.

Students will be able to simply focus on the academic material at hand, and not worry about what is in their desk or backpack. Plus, in this world of innovation, students will learn the value of being creative, inquisitive and cooperative through sitting in a way that fosters collaboration. Flexible seating gives them a chance to prepare for our ever-changing culture while expanding their minds!
