My Students

Debt is a huge problem in our country. People don't have much respect for money. When do we learn about money? From our parents, from TV, or from school? Most of us learn on our own. We become adults with credit card offers piling in our mailboxes showing us credit lines that seem so tempting.

Most of us fall for this and soon debt big or small begins.

My students come from low-income households where money is minimal. Necessities are a priority and when money comes it is splurged. Many things are bought on credit. Teaching the children that it's OK to buy now and pay later. Money management needs to be explicitly taught. Being financially literate begins in Kindergarten.

My Project

My little TK and Kinder students will learn to recognize, count and make change this year either during center time or RTI. What makes the difference is making the lesson close to their real-life. I am requesting a market play area so students can practice how to decide and spend money on groceries. They will need to look at prices and make choices about what to buy based on task cards I will create for them. Playing pretend and using their imagination will help my students master these financial skills.

Please help my little guys learn how to be financially literate.

I want them to be able to learn through play. The best part of this proposal is that children will be able to use these items year after year. Thanks for your consideration.
