Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
This gifted first-grade class is a group of 33 amazing six and seven years old students that attend a neighborhood school. Their families work hard and value education. Parents have told me that when their child learns, they learn too. Parents love hearing from their children what they did in school. They want the best for their children. The families are diverse economically and ethnically. Some families are from Mexico, Poland, and Asia. Some children are from families that have lived in Chicago for three generations. The children come to school eager and ready to learn. They are active and love hands-on learning and creating images to show off what they have learned. They are happy and engaged learners.
The COVID-19 school closure has set them back.
I want to make sure that they have access to books at their instructional and independent reading level. This includes chapter books to support their reading instruction.
My Project
COVID-19 has slowed the academic progress of my students. They have been quarantined in their home without access to books.
I want a library of books at their independent reading level available for them to take home and read to their families.
They would be able to bring 2 books home each night to read. Parents could share a video on Google Classroom of them reading.
Access to books is the most effective way to improve their reading. Practice with their families is a tremendous support for developing readers.
