My Students

As an educator at a low-income/high poverty school, my students face many challenges in and out of the classroom. The majority of our student population qualify for free or reduced-price lunch and many of them have little or no academic support at home. My class has a wide-range of abilities including gifted and talented as well as those with special needs, and many of my students are reluctant readers. Despite these challenges, it is my job to provide all of my students with the most creative and authentic learning experiences possible.

You can help provide meaningful learning experiences for my students to reach their full potential.

Each student's needs are different and the classroom materials and curriculum should reflect that.

My Project

The harsh fluorescent lights used in classrooms have been shown to negatively impact students and staff. We all know that natural light is best, so we try to take the students outdoors as much as possible. We still spend the majority of our day in the classroom. Fluorescent lighting provides light in a limited color spectrum. Research shows that these limitations can have a clear impact on moods, emotions, hormone regulation, and even sleep cycles. For most people with disabilities, the flicker and hum of fluorescent bulbs can cause physical pain. In others, the lights may cause headaches or distractions. When students are frustrated, we often turn off the lights and take a sensory break.

The use of Fluorescent Light Filters will help block out the flickering and humming of the lights and create a more peaceful atmosphere to promote emotional health and enhance learning.

The guided reading strips help lessen how much information students have to take in at once. Using the guided reading strips helps them focus on important information and cite text evidence. The sheet protectors reduce the number of copies we have to make!
