Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach at a Title I school where the majority of our students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch and go home to non-English speaking families. Some of our students are the only English speaking people in their families.
Our school has students who are homeless.
We have many students who live at the shelter for abused and battered women and children. Many other students are living with two or three families in small apartments because they are homeless.
I make it my goal every year to supply my students with the supplies they need and hands-on experiences that they wouldn't get elsewhere. It’s very easy to tie a project or activity into the standards the kids are supposed to be learning. By getting our hands on what we’re learning, we learn even more. I love it when my students finish an activity and say what a great time they had and how much they learned. Our students are very bright and deserve every opportunity they get.
My Project
If you asked me what gets used the most in my classroom these days, the answer would be mechanical pencils and earbuds. I think the kids eat them for snack! (Just kidding!)
No matter how gentle we are or how well we take care of our belongings and school supplies, something always breaks.
We are so fortunate to have laptops for each child to use and great programs for children to learn on. But, because each program is set the student's needs, each students is working on something different the kids need a solid pair of earbuds so they can hear their individualized lessons.
Writing is huge in fourth grade. Students are learning multi-paragraph essays and they need the pencils to do so.
