My Students

Seated between the largest town in South Dakota and a rolling expanse of farmland, the HNMS supports the diverse needs of students age 11-14 in a team-centered environment. Students come from a variety of social-economic levels and from both rural and urban homes.

Our school promotes the differentiated learning needs of our students through customization, enrichment, and transferable extensions of core concepts.

We are a quickly expanding school that strives to be on the cutting edge of educational theory and technology. Our district hopes to continue its attempt to stay current in best practices through the use of funds gained from the DonorsChoose.org program.

My Project

At HNMS, we believe in applying higher order learning to real world concepts. We challenge our students to think and apply knowledge in transferable ways that promote teamwork and innovation.

Through the use of collaborative Escape Rooms, our students will be working in teams to apply what they learn in the classrooms beyond the textbook.

They will analyze clues, search for relationships, and seek out tools in a game-based activity. This provides a multi-disciplinary approach and promotes a cohesive learning community and culture by having students work together across all grade levels. Students will be allowed to showcase a variety of talents, including hands-on, academic, physical and fine-arts challenges. The tools we are requesting will be instrumental in our Escape Classrooms.

The tools we are specifically looking into are a variety of locks, flashlights and pens for invisible ink, lock boxes, and flash drives. These tools, along with the curriculum developed by our staff and extra supplies provided by teachers and community members, will allow us to create the level of Escape Rooms that we have planned to extend our students’ learning. The lessons our teachers have prepared ask students to complete cross-curricular challenges that lead to the combinations needed for the lock boxes. Lock boxes contain further challenges and tools needed to compete them, including items such as the flashlights. These challenges incorporate a variety of media and learning styles and we are confident each student will find meaning and engagement through this exciting project. These tools will be reused multiple times throughout the year as teachers create mini-lessons and then at the end of each year for our school-wide activity.
