My Students

"When do we get to use clay, Miss?" Every week a student asks me this. It's no wonder. Since they walk into the art room and see 3 brand new kilns, a drying cabinet, 5 pottery wheels and 3 empty clay bins just collecting dust. We have the equipment; we just don't have any clay...

My students are 8th graders in a growing 6-12 school in the inner city.

We have a focus on the arts so many of our students choose to travel to come to our school. They are enthusiastic and artistically confident. And they really, really want to try working with clay.

My Project

I am excited to present our first unit in ceramics! We will start with hand-building techniques, learning to make small and large pieces of sculpture. We'll concentrate on using texture to enhance the overall design, working on developing creativity, fine motor skills and attention to detail. Our school has many all around good students, but sometimes we need something extra to inspire those who have a difficult time investing in their own education. Working with such a hands-on material will activate a whole different set of learning strengths that these kids can develop. I want to give all my students the experience of being excited about their work, to learn focus, and to be proud to show off their solid final project.

As the school grows to a full 6-12th grade, the art department must grow with it if we are to continue our commitment to educating and engaging the entire child.

Helping us get this ceramics unit started will not only help my 8th graders, but will provide a solid foundation for our program. Hopefully, we will then add to our equipment and enable the students to learn the advanced techniques of the pottery wheel...
