Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach 1st graders in a poor urban school in New York. My classroom is an integrated special class which includes both general education students as well as students with special needs.
A major part of our Readers Workshop is independent reading time. However, many of my students have not mastered the skills and strategies necessary to read independently for an extended period of time.
Although my students have not mastered the skills and strategies necessary to read independently for an extended period of time, this does not prevent them from listening to, understanding, and responding to a story they have read to them or hear on tape. With individual cassette players and books on tape my students would be able to participate in and enjoy independent reading time.
