I am the Attendance teacher for a K-5 school in Brooklyn, NY. serving a population of over 700 students, with 98% eligible for Title 1 services. We have been working very hard to improve absenteeism and lateness for the past several years. In my capacity as Attendance Teacher, I have initiated several incentive programs/projects aimed at improving attendance. Many of our students have taken to fulfilling “better late than never” and have improved their attendance, moving us from about 80% average daily attendance to about 92%. We are now faced with the challenge of getting students to focus on “the early bird catches the worm” to improve punctuality while maintaining their attendance average.
Our goal is to have students maintain their attendance while improving their punctuality to a maximum of three late arrivals per month. The incentive project would have students with marked improvement in attendance, but chronic lateness, entered into a program where they are given alarm clocks. When the student has maintained attendance for one month with only three tardies, they would have earned the alarm clock as their reward for meeting the challenge and would be able to keep it. If the child does not meet the standard, they will return the clock and go to the end of the waiting list to try again.
I am requesting a donation of 35 alarm clock radios to be used for distribution to the 35 most chronic lateness cases participating in the program. Your donation would really give us a great start and have our students on their way to managing their time and being more responsible.
