This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I am the librarian of a huge public high school and one of my biggest challenges is encouraging students to read. One way I have found to accomplish this goal is to exhibit books of a particular teen-friendly theme in our glass display case. However, in the past, the themes have corresponded to the national holidays since that is what I have decorations for and involved mostly fiction. Ideally, I (along with my student workers) would like to start creating more subject themed displays such as books about other countries and cultures, books turned into movies, cookbooks and other food-related books, books about careers, etc.
I am hoping that by creating displays showcasing book subjects, this will attract students who prefer non-fiction and who don't know that we have books on current, relevant subjects such as forensics and music.
It seems so simple, but advertising books with dynamic displays motivates teens to read, encourages people to venture inside the library, and inspires the imagination and mind.
I think if the students knew what treasures were in the library, they would check out a book. I just need to find innovative strategies to promote my wares. If they don't know what they are missing, they won't be able to take delight in it. Thank you for helping me compete with Tik Tok and to persuade them to read!
