My Students
"Mrs. Beaton, why don't you ever have the rest of the books in the series? You always have just the first book to get us hooked, but we want to read the rest of the series!"
My students make this claim at least once a week, calling for some kind of closure to all of their favorite book series.
My students are a group of developing readers from a small sub-rural high school in Michigan.
They want to explore the worlds beyond their own in a truly authentic way, and with their new-found love of reading, they understand that this kind of battle is possible through books!
My Project
My students will use these books as a part of their independent reading goals in sophomore English. The goal is for each students to read at least 25 books during the school year. The challenge is for them to read from a variety of genres, both their favorites and ones that might stretch them as readers. The fantasy and science fiction titles will support all students in finding something they can latch on to read.
The goal of 25 books can seem like a lofty one for many sophomores, with after-school clubs, sports, and household chores, but building the habits of life-long reading extends beyond the constraints of time management to support them far beyond their school years.
Literacy researchers know that developing readers have an easier time engaging when students find a book series that they really love.
When students can latch on to a favorite book series and actually ride it out to the end---and not just get their feet wet with Book One---, readers will stay committed to that text. So even as the complexity continues to develop and progress, developing readers want to keep at it all the way to the series finale.
