The Day America Changed: 9/11 Lessons for Tomorrow’s Leaders

Help me give my students access to a collection of books that honor the memory of September 11th while encouraging empathy, courage, and critical thinking.

My Project

Every day, I am inspired by the curiosity, empathy, and resilience of my middle school students. I want to give them books that teach courage, compassion, and the strength to face challenges, using the events of September 11th as a guide. They are thoughtful, imaginative, and eager to understand the world around them, and one of the most important lessons we can teach is how to learn from history—not just to remember events, but to grow as compassionate, informed citizens.

This project will provide my students with a carefully selected collection of books that explore 9/11 and the lessons it holds for courage, empathy, and perseverance.

Titles such as The Day the Towers Fell give clear, age-appropriate accounts of that day, while Survivor Tree tells a story of resilience and hope. Nine, Ten shares children’s perspectives, and I Survived the Attacks of September 11, 2001, along with its graphic novel version, helps students relate to the human experiences of courage and survival. With Their Eyes: The View from a High School at Ground Zero encourages empathy, while Learning About Difficult Subjects guides learners through sensitive topics thoughtfully.

These books are chosen to support all learners, including students with special needs and diverse backgrounds. Graphic novels, visually rich stories, and narratives that include multiple perspectives ensure accessibility, engagement, and comprehension for every student. Additional titles such as The 9/11 Story, Aftermath and Legacy, Ground Zero, and Extremely Loud And Incredibly Close provide historical context, while books like Yusuf Azeem Is Not a Hero, The Red Bandanna, and Love Is the Higher Law highlight heroism, empathy, and courage.

All of these books will live in our middle school media center, giving students the opportunity to explore these stories, connect with history, and grow into compassionate leaders.
