The Cyberpunk Gender-Sexuality Alliance: Books for an LGBTQ+ Book Club

Help me give my students 15 copies of "In the Watchful City" by S. Qiouyi Lu so they can read queer literature and continue learning outside of the classroom!

My Students

Our students chose to enter an early college, where students earn both a high school diploma and an associates degree in four years. They reflect the diversity of our large city, which means they come from a range of middle schools and socioeconomic backgrounds.

No matter their background, our students are curious, quirky, thoughtful, and dedicated.

Above all, they are committed to doing the extraordinary amount of independent reading, writing, and thinking demanded by an early college.

My Project

Every year, our Gender Sexuality Alliance hosts a book club where students read a book by an LGBTQ+ author. After reading and discussing the book, they then have the opportunity to meet with that author thanks to Lambda Literary's Writers in Schools Program. This year, the GSA is going to read "In the Watchful City" by S. Qiouyi Lu, a cyberpunk novella that explores the concepts of borders, power, diaspora, and transformation. The GSA is requesting physical copies of Lu's novella for all book club members to prepare for Lu's visit.

Access to queer literature is a necessity for my students.

In a time when queer literature is being challenged in schools and libraries across the country, it is more important than ever that my students have books that reflect their identities, validate their lived experiences, and welcome them in. Through this book club, the GSA has been able to read stories that feature found queer families, trans love stories, recovery from trauma, and teens coming of age. This year, they selected their first speculative fiction novel, and are excited to see how a queer lens transforms the worlds of science fiction and fantasy.

As part of this book club, the student leaders requested physical copies of the book. We have not been able to get physical copies for the last two book clubs due to the pandemic, and while the students appreciate access to digital materials, they want something that they can hold in their hands. Many of my students have told me that they just don't have the same experience reading on a phone or on their computer. They find themselves unable to focus. Physical books will allow them to truly disconnect from all of their digital distractions and fully immerse themselves in the Watchful City's world.
