The Culture of Sports: Learning Through Cricket

My Students

My students learn best by doing and experiencing rather than simply taking notes and/or watching movie clips.

Throughout our Geography & History of the World class, we have been talking about cultures from around the world and trying to experience something new from each culture instead of merely talking about it.

My freshmen are active, charismatic bundles of energy eager to learn about the big world in which they live. Our community is a bit of a homogeneous bubble where students are not often exposed to cultures, ideas, or belief systems different from their own. My job is to bring those new experiences into our classroom to help make them tolerant, global citizens.

My Project

One of the Indiana Academic Standards for our current unit is about Sports, Recreation, and Tourism. This is the perfect opportunity to experience something less familiar in our own culture because the sport of cricket is not one often played in the Midwest. As the weather gets warmer, and students become more eager to go outside, this seems like the perfect chance to accomplish both goals: taking them out into the fresh air and sunlight AND learning a sport that is very popular in other cultures.

The provision of a cricket set will allow the students an opportunity to try something new, be active, and enjoy the fresh spring air.

All of these things are beneficial to high school freshmen because it helps them engage in the content while employing practices of a healthy lifestyle. Thank you so much for your support of this cultural experience for my students.
