Help me give my students a relaxing calm down area where they can also be imaginative and create projects that include math, science, and the creative arts. They need a Cricut, building tiles, and cornhole.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
We all know and understand what excessive stress can do to us, physically and mentally. Imagine being a young child and going through excessive stress at home or at school. I work with kindergarten through second-grade students (most of them with special needs). These children have a variety of multi-sensory needs and deal with different pressures and stressors at home and in school. Often, students are frustrated, feel aggressive and experience emotional breakdowns. We all could use a calming corner to de-compress at times!
I want to create a relaxing, fun, and creative area where kids can go to release their aggression and take a minute to relax, helping them return to their learning productively.
When students reach me they have usually been removed from the classroom, are having a mental breakdown, or at the very least anxious or discouraged.
These materials will help the students by helping them to decompress by using their five senses (for example a fidget that they can pull or squeeze would use the sense of touch) to anchor themselves at the moment instead of worrying about what has happened in the past or what will happen in the future.
Teaching students to use their physical senses to anchor at the moment will help them to self-regulate/ manage their emotions by helping them recognize their own warning signs, and teach them how to work through and release these sensations in a way that is not harmful to themselves or others.
For students that regularly see me for counseling or social skills lessons, the laminator machine can help us with creating fun and engaging projects that can help to take their minds off their troubles at home or school. If my students are struggling to work through negative sensations and emotions, they're not learning.
