In order to compete for future leadership roles, college acceptance, and jobs in our current economic situation my students must have the opportunity to read a wide range of literature. One of our required texts for 10th grade is A Midsummer Night’s Dream by William Shakespeare.
My students are some of the poorest in the area, with approximately 60% being eligible for free or reduced lunches, but they certainly have determination.
They are some of the smartest kids I have ever met. Some of my students have a limited vocabulary and have trouble summarizing texts they have read. Unfortunately, too many of them have been forced to read books they didn’t like and now have a general distaste for reading. I hope to improve my students’ vocabulary and reading comprehension by reading A Midsummer Night’s Dream, an iconic comedic play about looking for love and making choices.
My Project
It’s no secret that budget cuts have greatly impacted our public school classrooms. Our faltering economy has prevented us from being able to purchase classroom materials, including texts that will engage and motivate students. Anyone who has spent much time with a room full of teenagers will agree that simply “telling” them anything is not as compelling as “showing” a lesson. By reading A Midsummer Night’s Dream, I will be able to introduce my students to Shakespeare’s beautiful language. This is a compelling story that is sure to make all of my students laugh out loud. Having a copy of the audio CD is sure to help my special education students hear and understand Shakespeare’s language.
