My Students

My target students are in the 7th and 8th grades at a Title I school in the Delta with a very high population of students who qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. They are incredibly bright and eager to learn. They love working on inquiry-driven projects that require them to work together and apply 21st-century skills. This project will allow students from varied economic backgrounds to work collaboratively with their teacher to prepare them for the workforce they will enter.

My Project

So many students today seem to think that money grows on trees. The idea that things have value and somone had to work to earn that item, is almost a foreign concept.

The goal of this project is to help students understand Opportunity cost, and how every choice cost them something.

When faced with a decision about immediate gratification vs. saving and risk/chance vs. a guarantee, many students choose poorly. This activity and game are designed to help students see that often there is a great benefit to planning, saving and making good financial decision.

Throughout this lesson, students will be faced with opportunities to make good or risky choices. Good choices will take longer to recognize the benifit, but risky choices could cost more in the end. What will they choose?
