I currently teach fourth grade and my kids love books. Because of recent school funding decreases in the state, materials in the classroom are difficult to come by.
Listening centers play a valuable part in comprehension and interaction with literature. Traditional listening centers can be noisy and distracting to students not at the center.
Currently I have been using CD walkmans for the last two years. The noise level and the enhancement of stories has exceeded my expectations. However, the CD players are poor quality, big and bulky, they skip during stories, and battery life if short. The CDs also get scratched and beat up with changing them in and out and I have to replace those every now and then as well as the batteries. I've had to use my own money to purchase items to keep it going and to replace them when they unexplainably quit working.
I am asking for MP3 players to replace what is left of my CD players because they will be of higher quality, longer lasting, and cheaper in the long run. I believe after the initial investment it will be cheaper to maintain the listening center because there will be fewer replacement costs.
With your donation you will make it possible for my students to interact with their literature and build comprehension skills. Thank you for your consideration.
