My Students
My students are fun, compassionate, and curious young children. When they arrive at school in the morning, they race to the schedule, excited to find out what is on the agenda for the day. Every day is fresh, new, and exciting!
Our school is one of the most diverse in the district, and is located in a tight-knit community in the heart of San Francisco.
Many of my students' cousins, parents, and even grandparents have attended our school! We also have a large number of immigrant families whom we welcome with open arms. The community bond shows through as students giggle, play, and learn together throughout the day.
My Project
This year, I am trying something new during my kindergarten writer's workshop block. I am teaching my students the art of storytelling. Every day, 2-3 children get to sit in the storytelling chair and tell the class a true story about their lives. Then, they draw and write these stories in a special journal.
I hope that hearing stories about each other's lives will help my students understand one another better, and build tolerance for their classmates.
After each child shares, I provide time for questions and comments. When a student told a story of a pet, many others raised their hands to share that they too have pets at home! When a child told us about the special treat he ate for his sister's birthday, we heard about many other birthday traditions! Sharing commonalities helps children develop acceptance and empathy for one another, which I hope will lead to an eventual tolerance for those outside of our classroom walls.
When students go to draw their stories, I want to empower them to draw themselves, their family members, and their friends as realistically as possible. The People Colors crayon and colored pencil sets provide enough variety to represent the many skin colors found in my classroom. By reading stories featuring characters who look like my students, I want to convey to my students that people of color have a significant place in our society, and they will too.
