This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

For the past nine years I have taught in an inner-city school. I have had the fortunate opportunity to teach Kindergarten, the grade I always wanted to teach...and I love it!!! Five year old children, no matter what their circumstances, are vivacious and eager to learn. But working in a district located in an urban, poor community has exposed to me to some very disheartening realities.

The children in my class have difficult home lives. They do not have the lifestyle or home experiences that all children deserve. Simple things like food and a good night's sleep are often missing from their daily lives. To expect that photographs are taken by family members to document their lives is highly unlikely. That is where I take over.

I am an avid, yet amateur photographer. Along with teaching Kindergarten, it is one of my passions. For the past several years I have created yearbooks, on my own time and money, for the graduating children in my classes. Last year I found Donors Choose. Hallelujah. I was able to receive a color printer for one of my proposals. Even better, I was granted replacement cartridges for the printer through another proposal. Here we are in a new school year with new children and a multitude of new experiences and faces to capture. I used the last of my ink cartridges to send home a photo of each of the children, all 22, as a gift to their parent or guardian at Open House. The families were delighted. I would like to continue this tradition, but I am nearly out of ink. PLEASE HELP!!

Simple things in life are often taken for granted by people who live normal lives. I am not talking about the rich and famous, but regular people like me and you. Donors Choose has really opened up opportunities for my classes. That is why I am back again requesting these ink cartridges for my printer. Your continued donations will ensure that the children in my class can be "as normal as possible". And I promise to make that a reality with your help.
