The College Essay for ESL Students

Help me give my students high-quality memoirs as examples of excellent writing for developing their college application essays. Students will write about text to self connections in order to generate content for essays on personal struggles and triumphs.

My Project

These books will provide inspiration for my ESL 1 and 2 students to develop their own memoir pieces. Students are required to write about their personal experiences for college Common Application essays. These award-winning texts allow students to make personal connections to the narrators' struggles. I will provide students with writing prompts related to sections of these books for students to generate ideas for their own memoir writing.

With these new books, my students will be able to analyze the content, text structure, and grammatical features of engaging memoirs in order to know the building blocks of the memoir genre.

These books will also increase student engagement in reading and allow students to witness the experiences of people like them - people who have left their childhood homes behind. I look forward to learning about my students' lives as I support them in developing their memoir essays, and I know these books will provide wonderful inspiration.
