Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My second graders attend an inner-city Title I school. At our school, all of the students receive free breakfast and lunch so they can focus on learning while they are in class. One-third of my students are English Language Learners which means that on top of learning the content for second grade they are also working to master English. My students are fun loving and eager to learn, and I am just as excited to teach them this year!
My Project
My students love using technology and I try to integrate it into as many lessons as possible. We use laptops, tablets, and my projector daily, but I would love to expose them to other kinds of technology. The Code and Go Mouse Robots and Activity Set will allow my students to explore coding in a simple, hands-on way through stations and free play. I plan on having my students use the robots to show their answers in stations, for example, if they solve a math problem they will code the robot to go sit on the answer. This way they are practicing a math skill and improving their coding skills at the same time! I will also have the Activity Set available for the students to use during indoor recess so the students can work together to solve and create their own mazes. I know that sharpening their critical thinking skills while coding will brighten even the rainiest recess!
I want to empower my students by showing them they can solve problems on their own.
The simplicity of the Code and Go Mouse Robots will allow my students to learn through trial and error. It will show them that even though what they tried did not work the first time, they can make changes and try again! I know that working with the robots will positively impact their academic growth because it will strengthen their problem solving and critical thinking skills.
