Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
As a teacher, one of my favorite moments is seeing my students cheer when I hold up a new book to read aloud. They are excited to explore favorite authors and to see what new adventures lie in the pages of the next story.
I have 21 wonderful students.
They already have favorite books they want to hear over and over. Our room is full of wonderful literature, and they love reading it. We are at a school that was recently removed from Turnaround status, so this means we have the same challenges and limitations as before, but now without the extra monetary support from the city. Our school has a population that is 94% below poverty line and 83% second-language learners. We have a lot of hurdles to cross, but we are doing our best with the resources we have.
My Project
Although our classroom is full of great books, the way our room is set up, they are not always easy to find. Currently, our books are in baskets on bookcases, which takes up a lot of space and the baskets easily fall over and spill. This fantastic bookshelf saves space and keeps books clearly organized. Having it on wheels makes it easy to set up the room, and to move things around as needed.
Essentially, even though it is just a bookcase, it helps our classroom on many levels.
At its root, it makes literature easier to find, more visible and more compactly stored. Also, it is convenient, compact, movable and easier to use than our current system. I can't wait to be able to use it in our classroom!
