This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I have been teaching for 20 years, but for the past 9 years I have taught kindergarten in an urban, inner-city school...and I love every minute of it. Young children have such passion for life and, although I am not 5 years old, so do I.

Our Language Arts curriculum includes a variety of stories which include audio cassettes. There are also several Cd's which have songs and rhymes to accompany the text books. We use our "boom box" every single day. It is no wonder that is on the verge of falling apart.

It is hard to play a cassette unless I slam the door shut. Cd's must be delicately placed in the holder because the middle "thing-a-ma-jig" that holds the Cd in place is about to break off. I must also reprogram the radio every time I use it when playing classical music for the children during their quiet time. HELP!!

Auditory skills are an important part of Early Childhood development. It is essential for the children to listen to their teacher, but it is a pleasure and an enriching experience to be able to listen to music. The children hear stories through the other voices on the cassettes that coordinate with the storybook. It is enlightening for children to hear classical music so they can expand their own concepts of fine arts. Listening to poems and rhymes with background melodies is much more appealing than me singing. Trust me in that one!
