The Circle of Life!

Help me give my students the ability to incubate eggs that are donated to us. We will be able to watch and hear the miracle of life as we learn about animals and the characteristics of life

My Students

My students are sixth graders. I teach six classes that are a mixture of special ed, regular ed and gifted and talented. They all bring a mixture of enthusiasm to my classroom. Some are the quiet, observational type while others jump into science with extreme passion. They all have compassion for living things and many questions for characteristics of life. We live in an area where about a third of my students are from low income families. Many of my students have never been exposed to any pets or the miracle of life.

My Project

In sixth grade we learn about a variety of animals, the characteristics of life and what animals need to live. We have several teachers that have their own chickens that lay eggs and they are willing to donate eggs for us to hatch. We will be able to candle the eggs and see the chick developing in the egg.

We will be able to hear and watch the chicks hatch from the eggs with the incubator.

Students will learn about homeostasis so that the eggs are in the correct environment to successfully hatch and what is needed to care for a newly hatch chick.
