This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
What came first the chicken or the egg?
I am an elementary science teacher for students in grades K-5. My students live in one of the poorest congressional school districts in the South Bronx, NY.
When I teach a unit to each grade level on life cycles I usually use meal worms as I have about 350 students and the worms are affordable. This year it would be magnificent if they could hatch chicken eggs themselves and maintain journals about the progress of the egg and the final product-the chick. What a learning curve I would see as each student would have to justify their response to the question and justify their conclusion.
Once the chicks are hatched we could donate them to the senior center and see if they'd like to keep the chickens and have fresh eggs to distribute to their members. The center is right down the block from the school and may be a worthwhile interactive project for the kids and for the elders!
Please help us with understanding the Circle of Life in more ways than one... Thanks!
