Help me give my students the opportunity to start a class print shop by funding a Cricut and other start up supplies. This will provide hands on vocational experience that will help them gain work skills and independence.
My students are hard working, curious, and very capable young adults who are motivated and have a lot to offer to our school community and society. My assistants and I teach in the self-contained classroom for high school students with significant cognitive disabilities. Each of our students has one or more moderate to severe disabilities that affect their physical, verbal, and/or intellectual levels. My students are an amazing group of young adults who focus on their abilities and not their disabilities.
As their teacher, it is my responsibility to provide avenues to support my students to overcome, adapt, and compensate obstacles, so they can be as independent as possible.
This includes teaching functional and vocational skills to be applied in and out of the classroom. My class is following the North Carolina Extended Content Standards of the Common Core. We work on academic goals as well as functional life skills, vocational skills, and social skills.
My Project
Within the Extend 1 Program, I focus teaching functional and vocational skills so my students can be as independent as possible. I currently accomplish this goal by having a class coffee shop for our faculty and staff on Tuesday and Thursday mornings, cleaning a local church on Fridays, and volunteering on campus by cleaning buses, picking up litter, and etc.
By expanding our class business to a print shop using the Cricut to create logo's and other designs for cups, hats, t-shirts, and car decals, we hope to raise enough income to fund groceries for cooking lessons as well as off campus learning experiences.
In addition to teaching life skills, our classroom business will aid in laying a foundation of academics through hands on STEM activities. Students will have the opportunity to explore the technology of the Cricut cutting machine and accessories to create and develop designs for t-shirts and vinyl decals. They will investigate ways in which we should advertise the classroom business. They will be responsible for measuring materials, counting materials and inventory, creating invoices for customers, and accepting payments for purchases.
This project will provide the Cricut Maker Bundle that contains all the necessary equipment to cut material to be be placed on products or sold separately. The easy press will allow for materials to be transferred onto cloth items, such as t-shirts.
